September 16 2024 General Meeting – Recovering Damaged Australian Landscapes

Vegetation restoration, weed management, and provision of fauna habitat in repairing damaged landscapes.

There can be no better description of this presentation than that of committee member Matt Allison:

“What a wonderful talk last night. Jono shared decades of experience of recovering country with us and you couldn’t help but feel inspired. We have so much to do but at least we are gathering the resources – info and technique – and we now know how important and beneficial fire is to restoring the Australian landscape. If only we’d paid more attention to the ways of the original Australians back when.”

Jonathan Saunders will discuss damaged Australian landscapes, and their capacity to recover, focussing mostly on the Cumberland Plain, but with examples from elsewhere.  He will talk about vegetation restoration, weed management, and provision of fauna habitat with examples

Jonathon trained as a biologist specialising in zoology and plant ecology. He has had a long and varied career in National Parks, including nominating sites for the Register of the National Estate, as a Ranger, Team Manager for Western Zone (western 70% of NSW) and Area Manager of Cumberland Area, based at Scheyville National Park, where he worked on the restoration and management of the Cumberland Plain reserves.  This involved well over fifteen years of adaptive management and research into weed control, fire management and encouraging regeneration and re-colonisation by fauna.
