A Fantastic Day of Teamwork and Conservation!
Members of OFF and Southern Highlands Landcare Network up for an inspiring day of planting 500 food trees and nesting habitats for the Glossy Black Cockatoo at Penrose in the Southern Highlands. This initiative, in partnership with “Save Our Species” and Glossies in the Mist is a crucial step in preserving the habitat of this iconic species.
The day couldn’t have been more perfect – with ideal soil conditions, fantastic weather, and the company of passionate volunteers. The efforts culminated in a delicious lunch to celebrate the hard work.
Beth Moth from “Save Our Species” shared some exciting news: Glossy Black Cockatoos have been spotted in plantings made 2-3 years ago, providing clear evidence that the corridor plantings are already proving successful. She also mentioned that the survival rate for the trees planted so far is an impressive 85%, which is highly encouraging.
A heartfelt thank you to Jo and Ray, the property owners, for hosting the event, and to all volunteers and participants for their dedication and hard work. Special thanks also go to the Menai Wildflower Group who have grown over 25,000 trees for this important project.
Together, we’re making great strides in protecting the Glossy Black Cockatoo and ensuring a thriving future for this remarkable species!
